Airport Express and music

I know this may be elementary to some people, but I added an Airport Express to my network after I got the Airport Extreme and have been using it mainly to stream music from my laptop or computer to my stereo so I have never used it on it's own.

 

I want to set up my stereo and stream music for a wedding reception from my laptop to the stereo. Is it possible to do that simply using Aiport Extreme on it's own? Do I just plug in the Airport Express into the stereo and then get my laptop to find it? Like I said, this is probably basic to some people, but not to me.
